How many times have we heard of lawns. This term refers to intense green, a velvety lawn that adds beauty to a home compared to any other type of look. The meadows represent the perfection of their kind. The rich English landowners of the seventeenth century began to cultivate fields adjacent to their villas and apartments. In the nineteenth century the designers further perfected the lawn maintenance operations still in use today. There are many ways to take care of a lawn, but the classic English methods are perfect both for small courtyards and ornamental gardens and for cultivating large grounds near villas or estates. For large gardens or expanses of land, modern power tools are appropriate. If the garden is to be built in a space where a tree or flower beds is placed in the center, it must be built around it. With few exceptions, a lawn can be built anywhere and the best time is autumn. However, many English gardeners have had excellent results even in periods of intense cold using particular seeds, grafting them in depth so that the germination coincides with the end of winter. To prepare a sowing of a lawn it is necessary to compact the base of the soil well, which must not necessarily be rich but must have decomposing plant material in large quantities. This is enough to get a proper lawn. The soil must also have a thickness of at least 20 centimeters of friable soil, well worked and on a very thin surface.
ENGLISH LAWN: SOWING
The seeds must be appropriate therefore, it is advisable to seek advice from an expert who supplies them based on the climatic characteristics of the place and the type of soil on which the lawn is to be grown. Some seeds are suitable for lawns exposed to shade or for already fertile soils while others for very sandy soils. The quantity of seeds needed must be pure, that is it must not contain weeds greater than 1%. A high quality blend is composed of well-chosen and selected seeds per lawn that are fertilized using about 13-14 grams per liter of water. The sowing must be done on a spring day, without wind and rain and occurs in two different directions, possibly in a zig zag fashion to ensure uniform coverage of the soil. For a large area it is good to use a mechanical seeder in common use on golf courses. After sowing, the soil must be watered thoroughly and treated with a spray fertilizer.
ENGLISH LAWN: DRAINAGE AND FERTILIZATION
It is good to remember that a lawn to look beautiful and elegant must be well drained. Once watered, it is advisable to remove excess water from the surface so that puddles do not form which can cause the soil to become acidified: the solution is therefore to sprinkle bags of wild moss onto them. However, if the drainage has been studied in a workmanlike manner this problem does not occur. An alternative to avoid the accumulation of water and to obtain a good drainage is to sprinkle in the ground at half height of the thin gravel, this obviously in the moment before the sowing. The feeding of a grassy lawn especially when it has been shaved is quite problematic. In fact, when the grass does not find the essential nutrients, once it has rooted a total raking operation it must be left to rest for at least a week. After this time, a new sowing is started, which joining the root system already well compacted, allows in the following flowering to obtain a perfectly balanced lawn from the biological point of view. The fertilization of a lawn must in any case be carried out two or three times a year and the ideal period is that which goes from April to the beginning of September.
Lawn: PRATO INGLESE: MAINTENANCE
The next step to take care of a lawn is to regularly cut the grass avoiding making it grow too tall. On the other hand, during the sprouting period the grass cuts produce micro particles that provide additional nutrients to the soil, joining the normally used fertilizer. It is advisable to water a lawn at least once or twice a week in an abundant way rather than every day with light and useless splashes. If the surface of the lawn is struggling to become compact, it is important to apply finely ground peat which is very useful. In fact, it acts like a sponge and retains moisture during periods of excessive drought. From how it is clear from what has been described so far, to get a beautiful lawn making it typically in English style is sufficient only so much effort and above all three factors are fundamental: the soil, the water and a good fertilizer.
